My Constituency A Hidden Gem!

Berikut merupakan satu artikel yang saya tulis pada 30 April 2008 yang lalu mengenai kawasan saya: P188 Silam. Ianya untuk edaran akhbar dan Dewan Rakyat. Artikel ini adalah dalam bahasa Inggeris. Dibawah ini saya kepilkan artikel asli;

My constituency a hidden gem

MY constituency, Silam, is like a gem that has yet to be discovered.

It is famous for being the home of Danum Valley, a vast reserve of lush tropical lowland forest, and the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, which among others, is home to Borneo’s pygmy elephants.  Not many people know that Silam is where the oldest human remains in the country was found. Tests on the remains found at Tingkayu, Kunak, showed that they were 70,000 years old.

Silam is also the first place in Sabah where Islam took root. Ancient artifacts which are housed at the Sabah Museum, showed the first people who embraced Islam were from Kampung Silam, which still exists today. It is also the place where you will find the largest tract of oil palm plantations. It is as large as Negri Sembilan and 46 per cent of my 320,000 constituents, work in the oil palm industry.

These are my constituency’s unique points and I am actively promoting them. Tourism and environment conservation are very dear to my heart, and I am going to open a one-stop tourism centre at my office to promote the natural beauty of Silam.

This is in addition to a website — http://www.e-sahabatparlimensilam.com, which I have set up to promote my constituency not only to net-savvy Malaysians but also to the outside world.  The people can expect me to raise issues that are close to their hearts. Tourism, environment and human resource development will be my main focus.

I want to promote tourism and protect the environment at the same time because our natural environment is a heritage, which we can utilise to earn revenue without destroying it. Also, the young people need to be developed as they will be our future workforce.

As I am new to this, I will have to observe and learn before raising these issues. My constituents and others who are interested in the environment and tourism can visit my website and give me some feedback so that we can work together.

As a first time MP, I expect to work hand-in-hand with the people to develop the area. I cannot do it alone. It is a heavy responsibility, but I take this as a challenge to serve the people. I will be a friendly, down-to-earth and hardworking representative. I have opened three service centres in the constituency — Lahad Datu, Tungku and Kunak — to give the best service possible to my constituents.

I am also getting feedback from Silam residents on their views on various issues. It includes suggestions on how I can improve myself. I aim to eradicate hardcore poverty in my constituency. My target is to eliminate it 100 per cent in Lahad Datu by 2010.
